MILLIDGEVILLE, NB, Sept. 6, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, today announced a contribution of up to $5,925 to support the official dedication of Wade-Myles Park and the unveiling of the Millidgeville Community Cenotaph. These funds, in addition to a previously announced contribution in support of the cenotaph's construction, bring the Government of Canada's total contribution to this project to $8,675.
"Community monuments and cenotaphs provide crucial links to our past, which is why our Government is committed to help cities and towns like Millidgeville have places to gather and remember for generations to come," said Minister Blaney. "The cenotaph's unveiling at the new Wade-Myles Park makes this event very special as it allows us to both honour our Veterans and celebrate Millidgeville's unique aviation history."
The dedication and unveiling ceremony included readings by several Grade 2 students at the neighbouring M. Gerald Teed School, a flypast of modern and vintage aircraft, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
"The members of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society and their partners have built more than just a monument; they have inspired the people of this community to rediscover their history," said Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John. "They have inspired children to learn more about the role their ancestors and their community played in important world events like the Second World War and they have honoured those who have served and those who continue to serve Canada today."
The funding announced today was made possible through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund. Applications for the Community Engagement Partnership Fund are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events may be eligible for funding.
