Government of Canada proposes to modernize the Air Canada Public Participation Act

OTTAWA, March 24, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, introduced legislation in Parliament today to modernize the Air Canada Public Participation Act. The proposed amendments will clarify the nearly 30-year-old Act to allow Air Canada the flexibility to be competitive in a constantly evolving air transport sector.

Air Canada recently announced its intention to purchase Bombardier C-Series aircraft, and to maintain those aircraft in Canada for 20 years, which will create important economic opportunities for highly skilled workers in the Canadian aerospace sector. Air Canada also announced its intention to contribute to the creation of centres of excellence for aircraft maintenance in Quebec and Manitoba. These new developments, and the intention to discontinue litigation involving Air Canada, Quebec and Manitoba, create an appropriate context to modernize the Act.

Quote

"It is important for the Government of Canada to allow air carriers equal opportunities to compete in an evolving air sector. The changes introduced today are based on a balanced approach that will support job creation in aerospace across the country."

The Honourable Marc Garneau,
Minister of Transport
