34 Per Cent of Workers Have Dated a Co-Worker, According to CareerBuilder.ca Survey

-- 26 per cent of office romances ended in marriage

TORONTO, Feb. 11, 2015 /CNW/ -- From Mulder and Scully on 'The X-Files' to Murdoch and Julia in 'Murdoch Mysteries,' working relationships that turn into romantic ones have always made for good television. Perhaps that's why so many workers have tried the same thing in real life.

According to a new survey from CareerBuilder.ca, 34 per cent of workers have dated someone with whom they work. Of those, 26 per cent ended up marrying their workplace paramour.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, CareerBuilder.ca releases a new survey that takes a closer look at romance in the workplace. The national survey was conducted online on behalf of CareerBuilder.ca and included more than 1,000 full-time, private sector workers across industries and company sizes.

Mixing Business with Pleasure

Among those who have had an office romance, most say their office romance began as a result of working in the same department (25 per cent),  followed by late nights on the job (17 per cent), after-work happy hours (13 per cent) and during lunch hours (13 per cent). Nearly 1 in 10 workers (9 per cent) fell in love working on the same project, and the same number (9 per cent) coupled up at a company holiday party.

Keeping It Classified

Nearly half of workers who have had an office romance (46 per cent) had to keep their relationship a secret. Nearly half of those workers (43 per cent) have accidentally run into co-workers while out on a date with their office sweetheart.

Risky Business Affairs

Of those who have had an office romance, 35 per cent have dated someone in a higher position than them, and 18 per cent have dated their own boss.

As if dating the boss wasn't perilous enough, 16 per cent of workers who have had an office romance have had an affair with a co-worker where one person involved was married at the time.
