OTTAWA, Oct. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - A Toronto hematologist and award-winning
educator has been chosen as the new President-Elect of the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Kevin Imrie, MD, FRCPC,
brings a lifelong passion for not only advancing specialty medicine but
working with all health care professionals and health organizations to
improve Canadian health care.
"We need to not only enable our future physicians to meet the evolving
and increasingly complex health needs of Canadians, but also ensure
that our health system provides the support specialists need to deliver
timely, high-quality care," says Dr. Imrie. "The Royal College will
work with all health care stakeholders to provide leadership in medical
education and health systems innovation."
Dr. Imrie currently serves as the physician-in-chief and professor of
medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. A clinical hematologist,
Dr. Imrie is also the Vice-Chair, Education for the University of
Toronto's Department of Medicine, overseeing the continuum of medical
education. He will assume the President-Elect position immediately.
A dedicated physician and medical educator, Dr. Imrie has served in a
number of leadership capacities, including Vice-President of Education
with the Royal College and Director of Postgraduate Programs and
Associate Dean, Admission and Evaluation in Postgraduate Medicine for
the University of Toronto. He is also a "peer surveyor" with the
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and has helped lead a
wide variety of other health care organizations across Canada.
Dr. Imrie is a highly regarded teacher and past recipient of a wide
variety of teaching awards, including the University of Toronto's
prestigious Faculty of Medicine Award for Excellence in Postgraduate
Medicine Education and the Department of Medicine's Teacher of the
