Three Arrests made in 'Opapa' Investigation

TORONTO, July 11, 2012 /CNW/ - On July 10, 2012, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police along with the Canada Border Services Agency arrested three people in relation to the project 'Opapa' Human Trafficking investigation.

Gizella DOMOTAR (43 years old), Anna LUKACS (37 years old) and Gyozo PAPAI (42 years old) were arrested at a residence in Toronto without incident.  All three were wanted on Canada Wide Warrants for Human Trafficking under section 279 (1) of the Criminal Code.

All three accused are currently in custody awaiting bail hearings at the John Sopinka Court House located at 45 Main St, Hamilton, Ontario.

"Tuesday's arrests bring the remainder of the 'Opapa' human trafficking ring believed to be in Canada before the courts to be dealt with by our justice system. Human Trafficking offences run against the core of Canadian values" said Inspector Steve Martin (Officer in Charge of the Hamilton Niagara Regional Detachment)

"Part of CBSA's mandate is to investigate persons in violation of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA)," said Goran Vragovic, GTA Regional Director General, Canada Border Services Agency. "We will continue to work closely with the RCMP and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that appropriate action mandated by law is taken against individuals determined to be in contravention of immigration legislation."

Project 'Opapa' is an RCMP led investigation that targeted an alleged Human Trafficking ring that operated in the Hamilton area.  It is alleged that the victims were recruited from their home in Hungary to work for their traffickers in the construction industry.
