Testing of public warning sirens - Montréal businesses to test public warning sirens on November 21

MONTREAL, Nov. 20, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Ville de Montréal's Centre de sécurité civile will be coordinating warning siren testing on public sirens on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at 3:15 p.m. Simulation will take place simultaneously in Montréal-Est and seven boroughs. The siren test was introduced last year and is now carried out on a regular basis. This test of the public warning system is part of sound risk management practices meeting Environment Canada's regulatory requirements.

Warning siren testing will be carried out with five companies whose industrial processes involve dangerous substances. This technical test aims to make sure that the warning equipment is in good condition and to check the level of preparedness of those involved in emergency measures.

Montrealers should know that no specific action is required on their part.

The warning siren will be heard within a radius of 445 m to 1.8 km of the areas at risk in the boroughs of Anjou, Lachine, LaSalle, Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles, Saint-Léonard and Ville-Marie. Notices indicating that a siren test will take place have already been distributed door-to-door within the area at risk indicating that a siren test will be held. Also, the participating companies have distributed an information sheet to nearby residents, with specific information regarding the nature of the industrial hazard in their neighbourhood, as well as procedures to follow in the event of a major industrial accident involving the release of a toxic substance.
