Occupational therapy can offer innovative solutions in health care

OTTAWA, July 26, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) commends the Council of the Federation's Health Care Innovation Working Group (HCIWG) for the release of today's report, From Innovation to Action: The First Report of the Health Care Innovation Working Group.

Claudia von Zweck, Executive Director of CAOT, shared the importance of the report: "Today's release marks the first step towards provincial and territorial leadership in managing Canada's health services for the next generation."

Through a strategic and collaborative process, the HCIWG worked to gather input from various health professional organizations to identify leading practices that can effectively respond to the changing health needs of Canadians. The result is a document that supports opportunities to improve health outcomes through the implementation of inter-jurisdictional clinical practice guidelines, promoting interprofessional team-based models of care, and taking coordinated action to manage health human resource initiatives.

von Zweck went on to say, "while this report offers insightful recommendations, it is critical that the Premiers and their governments recognize the important contributions all health professions make to providing quality care. Occupational therapists offer essential health services to individuals across their life time and our contributions cannot be forgotten when identifying leading practices and innovative solutions to health system change."
