Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador Program connects youth to nature and history

SUSSEX, NB, May 17, 2013 /CNW/ - Today the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced that Julia Belliveau, a native of Sussex New Brunswick, will be one of the next two Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors.

"Congratulations to Julia who has been chosen to join the Parks Canada team to help inspire young Canadians to be active, get outdoors and learn more about Canada's natural beauty and rich history," said Minister Kent. "This young lady brings great enthusiasm to the program and will inspire other young Canadians to build lasting memories with our country's treasured places."

Ms. Belliveau is currently a first year International Business student at Carleton University in Ottawa. She has demonstrated strong leadership skills as President of Student Council and co-captain of a theatre group. She's a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills and will be a perfect fit to inspire and lead her peers and help start a national conversation about Canada's treasured places.

Julia will be sharing her title with Colin Sutherland, a University of Ottawa student. They were selected from the candidates who applied for the position through a recruitment process for the two Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors in collaboration with Global Vision, a non-profit organization with an established record of engaging and supporting the leadership development of Canadian youth.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the creation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador program as the Government of Canada gift to Their Royal Highnesses to commemorate the 2011 Royal Tour of Canada.

The youth ambassador program is one of a number of initiatives by which Parks Canada is working to connect youth to Canada's natural and cultural heritage.
