Montreal Students Celebrate Black History Education with author Lawrence Hill

MONTREAL, Jan. 26, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Local high school students joined award-winning author Lawrence Hill today at École secondaire Antoine-de-St-Exupéry to launch the French language Black History in Canada Education Guide created by The Historica-Dominion Institute and sponsored by TD Bank Group. The Education Guide draws on Hill's celebrated historical fiction, The Book of Negroes (Aminata), published by Pleine Lune, to bring Black History alive in classrooms across Canada.

Working from the Education Guide, students from grades 10 and 11 led a Q & A with the author discussing important themes relating to the history and culture of the Black Canadian community.

"The Black History in Canada Education Guide highlights the stories, personalities, and significant contributions of Black Canadians. It is an important resource for students and for all Canadians," said Lawrence Hill. "I am delighted to take part in today's launch."

"We are thrilled to be in Montréal with Lawrence Hill to celebrate Black History Month and our newly released French language Education Guide," said Jeremy Diamond, the Institute's Director of Development and Programs. "We are proud to pay tribute to African-Canadian heritage today and in classrooms across Canada."

"Both the Guide and portal tie in strongly with our commitment to promote success in education for black youth and enhance Canadians' knowledge and sense of pride in the role of the black community in our history," says Clément Ndiaye Regional Sales Manager, Personal Credit, TD Canada Trust. "We're delighted to partner with The Historica-Dominion Institute on these innovative initiatives."
