Minister Raitt engages stakeholders on occupational health and safety

TORONTO, May 31, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, today addressed occupational health and safety issues in her remarks at the Crane Rental Association of Canada's Annual General Meeting and Conference.

In Canada, every year, close to 1 000 workers die as a result of work-related accidents. According to the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada, the construction industry accounted for close to a quarter (23.3 percent) of all workplace fatalities between 2008 and 2010 - the highest of any industry.

In her remarks, Minister Raitt highlighted the Government of Canada's commitment to working with unions, employers, provinces, territories, and experts to raise awareness of and improve occupational health and safety regulations.

"Promoting safe and healthy workplaces across Canada is a shared responsibility," said Minister Raitt. "Preventing injury and illness in the workplace helps build a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Canada."

She also stressed the integral role of partnerships between stakeholders and government to identify workplace hazards and find solutions to issues that threaten the health and safety of employees.

The Crane Rental Association of Canada provides a social and educational forum to advance safety and professional expertise to crane rental operations companies, manufacturers, and suppliers who support the specialty crane rental business in Canada.

The Labour Program is committed to promoting fair, safe and healthy workplaces. It also develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, including the Canada Labour Code. These laws for federally regulated workers and employers cover industrial relations, health and safety, and employment standards.
