Harper Government Supports King's Theatre Society

ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, NS, Jan. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Audiences in Annapolis Royal will be able to enjoy an eclectic performing arts program throughout the year, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament (West Nova), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

The funding will support the King's Theatre Society's Live Presents program, which will feature more than 30 concerts, as well as dance, theatre, and comedy performances. The series, which is taking place from April 2012 to March 2013, will feature performances by professional Anglophone, Francophone, and Aboriginal artists from eight Canadian provinces and abroad. Dance and theatre workshops will also be offered to the public.

"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in organizations like the King's Theatre Society," said Minister Moore. "By supporting the Live Presents series, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and support our arts, culture, and heritage."

"The King's Theatre Society plays a vital cultural role in this region of Nova Scotia," said Mr. Kerr. "Our Government commends the group for bringing such a variety of performance experiences to people in the community."

"King's Theatre is very pleased and grateful to receive the Arts Presentation Grant from Canadian Heritage. This grant will allow us to continue to program vibrant, eclectic, and challenging art performances and outreach activities," said Geoff Keymer, General Manager of King's Theater. "It will also ensure that this rural community has direct access to diverse, high-quality artistic expression. This interaction between the artist and audience will enrich the community and increase understanding and spiritual growth through the shared artistic experience."

The King's Theatre Society was incorporated in 1988 with a mandate to provide opportunities for communities to partake in arts and culture activities. Its mission is to foster the discovery and enjoyment of the performing arts and other forms of creative expression through performances, educational programs and community-based activities.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $10,500 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
