OTTAWA, July 4, 2013 /CNW/ - Louise Fréchette, Chair of the Board of Directors of CARE Canada, a leading international humanitarian and development organization, today announced the appointment of Gillian Barth, as its new president and CEO.

"Gillian is a visionary leader whose career has been defined by an unshakeable dedication to ending poverty," said Ms Fréchette. "Her vast experience of the international humanitarian and development field and her outstanding leadership qualities prepare her well to lead CARE Canada in a context of a rapidly changing developing world."

"I am tremendously honoured to have the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary organization with its emphasis on women and girls," said Ms. Barth. "Promoting gender equality and empowering women is one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals. For CARE, it is essential to lifting entire families out of poverty - and it defines our programs worldwide."

Throughout her career at CARE, Ms. Barth has worked to ensure CARE Canada plays a leading role within the CARE International federation, which will be central to her term as president and CEO.

"I look forward to the positive global transformation that is underway within CARE International. As a founding and significant member of the federation, we will continue to strive together with our partners to achieve the highest levels of performance and impact in serving individuals and families in the poorest communities of the world."
