Finalists Chosen for 2012 Great Grants Awards

Ontario Trillium Foundation recognizes organizations for projects with outstanding impact

TORONTO, Feb. 22, 2012 /CNW/ -

NEWS

The Ontario Trillium Foundation today announced the finalists nominated for the prestigious 2012 Great Grants Awards. The awards recognize charitable and not-for-profit organizations that have had an exceptional and lasting impact on the communities they serve.

These organizations exemplify excellence, innovation and leadership in building healthy communities across the province. Among the 17 finalists contending for an award are:

Girls on the Run, York Region & GTA - The popular after-school social recreation program for Grades 3 to 8 girls combines training for a non-competitive 5K event with developing self-esteem and strong values. Seventy-five schools are already signed up for the spring of 2012.

Club Action Hearst - Located in a community of 5,600 people, Club Action Hearst for seniors serves no less than 650 members and involves 13 partnerships. In addition to the well-being of its seniors, this innovative leader is now turning to local youth. Seniors in Hearst are looking out for all and setting a path for sustainable collaboration.

Forests for Life c/o Woodstock & District Developmental Services - Planting non-native trees was a common practice in Oxford, Elgin and Middlesex counties since getting native tree stock had become increasingly difficult and expensive. This all started to change in 2006 thanks to a very innovative partnership.

Kashechewan First Nation Youth Video Project - Many youth in this remote community on the James Bay Coast face a large school drop-out rate, drug and alcohol abuse and a high risk of suicide. The prospect of employment is low. Reaching out to their community and acquiring skills that can be used locally are potentially life-changing.

Temiskaming International Plowing Match 2009 - The small Temiskaming Municipality of Earlton opened its doors to the world. The district dared to dream big and its vision brought in more than 70,000 people to the first-ever International Plowing Match and Rural Expo hosted in Northern Ontario. The event generated $21 million for the area.

In addition to the above traditional categories of nominations, the Great Grants Awards feature for the first time a People's Choice Award. Ontarians are now able to vote online for the organization whose youth-focused grant the public thinks has had the greatest impact. There are 18 nominees from across Ontario. Voting for the People's Choice Award takes place February 13 to 29.
