CAW Applauds Call for Greater Transparency and a Canadian-Made Search and Rescue Fleet

TORONTO, June 21, 2012 /CNW/ - The CAW is commending the Rideau Institute and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives' joint call for  the federal government to a adopt a transparent, objective, made-in-Canada solution to the country's need for a new Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue (FWSAR) fleet.

The report Search and Replace: The Case for a Made-in-Canada Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue Fleet is in response to the recent news that the Treasury Board has granted "first-phase approval" of $3.8 billion for new search-and-rescue planes.

"When a major project like the FWSAR replacement takes place, it is crucial that the government look to Canadian-made options first," said CAW Aerospace Director Dawn Cartwright. "Investing Canadian tax dollars in Canadian equipment and jobs is simply a smart way for governments to use public funds."

Cartwright also agreed that improved transparency throughout the process would go a long way in keeping public confidence in the project.

Requirements for the replacement FWSAR fleet could be drafted this summer, and finalized by the fall.

The CAW is a supporter of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and a collaborator of the Rideau Institute.
