Canada and Saskatchewan Ministers for Status of Women Highlight Support For Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

OTTAWA, May 3, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women met with her provincial colleague the Honourable June Draude, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women in Saskatchewan, to discuss ways of ending violence against women and girls.

"The Harper Government is committed to improving the lives of women and girls across our country, including in Saskatchewan," said Minister Ambrose. "We will continue taking actions that help to eliminate violence against women and girls because we owe it to them, their families and their communities."

"We are determined to do all we can to reduce and prevent violence against women and girls in Saskatchewan," said Minister Draude. "That is why we have pledged to keep working with our federal colleagues to achieve this goal. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice is investing $375,000 in developing new transition house services in Melfort and supporting enhanced service capacity in existing transition houses in Regina and Prince Albert that assist women and their children to escape situations of domestic violence."

Minister Ambrose met with Minister Draude to discuss issues of mutual concern, particularly government actions to end violence against women and girls. Minister Ambrose took the occasion to commend the Government of Saskatchewan for highlighting the theme "We All Have a Role" during its recent Victims of Crime Awareness Week.

Minister Ambrose also thanked her colleague for the Government of Saskatchewan's support of the recent publication entitled "Measuring violence against women: Statistical trends". It was developed in partnership with the Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) Forum of Ministers responsible for the Status of Women.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2007, supporting over 600 projects.
