Assembly of First Nations National Executive Reiterates Clear Commitment to First Nations Children, Announces Key Meetings with First Nations on Bill C-33: First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act

OTTAWA, May 7, 2014 /CNW/ - Following a two-day meeting in Ottawa, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Executive Committee today issued the following statement on Bill C-33: First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act, announcing key upcoming meetings with First Nations.

"The AFN National Executive has noted Aboriginal Affairs Minister Valcourt's announcement on May 5 to put Bill C-33 on hold.

We will be taking part in events planned in Ottawa on May 14, 2014 and will convene a meeting of the Chiefs Committee on Education in Ottawa on May 15, 2014 to be followed by a Special Chiefs Assembly to be held in Ottawa on May 27, 2014. It is our expectation that at this Assembly, the Chiefs will adopt a collective position on Bill C-33.

The future of First Nations children is of the utmost importance - we care deeply about our children and remain unified in our commitment to move beyond the status quo and to secure much needed investments in First Nation education."

The Assembly of First Nations is the national organization representing First Nations citizens in Canada.
