WineAlign Announces Winners of the 2015 National Wine Awards of Canada

Best Wines in Canada; Canadian Winery of the Year; Top 25 Wineries in Canada

TORONTO, Aug. 6, 2015 /CNW/ - WineAlign, Canada's largest wine website, has published the results of the 2015 National Wine Awards of Canada, a competition that recognizes the best in Canadian wines. This was the largest competition for Canadian wine in history, with 1,408 entries from 205 wineries from across Canada.

The 15th edition of the National Wine Awards of Canada was judged in June in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The wines were blind tasted by a panel of Canada's most respected wine writers and wine critics. For the second year in a row, the judges were joined by acclaimed UK wine journalist Dr. Jamie Goode. Eighteen judges spent five days blind tasting the wines before awarding 14 platinum medals to the absolute best one percent of the wines in the competition.  They also awarded 101 Gold, 263 Silver and 375 Bronze medals.

Based on overall performance against its peers, BC's Mission Hill Family Estate was named Canadian Winery of the Year.  New this year is an award for the Best Performing Small Winery; the inaugural award went to Ontario's Thirty Bench Wine Makers. A complete list of the Top 25 Wineries in Canada is available here.

"The National wine awards list is out and there are plenty of outstanding wines to delve into from across the country," said Anthony Gismondi, co-head judge and principal at WineAlign. "Canadian wine producers have found their mojo.  No longer content to copy the world, they are forging their own path interpreting our grapes and soils and producing wines with a true sense of place."

"We were pleased with the breadth and depth of entries in this year's competition and believe it to be the largest and most diverse collection of Canadian wine in history," said Bryan McCaw, founder of WineAlign. "Our goal is to provide consumers with the confidence to reach for any of the medal winning wines knowing they are about to enjoy a delicious moment in Canadian wine history."
