Waiward achieves one-million hours without a lost time incident
EDMONTON, March 23, 2015 /CNW/ - Waiward, one of Canada's largest steel fabricators and a leading provider of construction services in Alberta, has successfully achieved one million hours without a Lost Time Incident (LTI) at its Edmonton facility.
An industry-wide key performance indicator, LTI measures the time that is lost due to injures at work. Reaching this significant milestone is the result of Waiward's employee-led approach to hazard prevention, and reflects the company's commitment to setting higher safety standards.
At an employee celebration last week, Terry Degner, President, recognized Waiward's company-wide efforts to improve safety practices, saying: "In recent years, we've introduced several new policies and procedures to ensure safety is firmly embedded within our culture. Our aim was to take safety beyond checking boxes and into the hearts and minds of our employees—and I'd like to thank each and every one of you for stepping up to help us achieve this."
Many Waiward employees also noted the importance of teamwork in reaching the one-million milestone: "We reached it with the participation and interaction of everybody in the company," said Felix Romano, General Foreman. "But it's only the beginning. The second million is ahead of us and within reach." Dale MacDonald, Journeyman Welder, commented, "Reaching one-million hours proves we have a culture that cares."
Waiward has focused on implementing robust safety policies and procedures to protect its employees. This includes the introduction of its competency-based software program, which provides a benchmark for measuring performance among tradespeople and helps to keep employees safe. In addition, Waiward's employees are offered every opportunity to participate in the decisions that affect their safety—which in turn empowers employees at all levels to shape the company's approach to safety.
