Volunteer groups at GO stations accepting cash donations for Haiti

TORONTO, Jan. 20, 2010 /CNW/ - Starting this Friday, GO Transit will work with charitable partners to do its part in raising funds for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. GO stations will host volunteers from World Vision Canada and the Canadian Red Cross accepting cash donations towards the relief effort.

On Friday, January 22, World Vision Canada volunteers will be collecting donations at select GO stations in and around the GTA. During the morning rush hour, volunteers will be at the following GO stations: Bramalea; Clarkson; Cooksville; Richmond Hill; and Unionville.

On Wednesday, January 27 and Thursday, January 28, Canadian Red Cross volunteers will be accepting cash donations inside the GO Transit concourse at Union Station during morning and afternoon rush hours.

"We urge our employees, customers and friends to help the people in Haiti in any way that they can," says Gary McNeil, GO Transit Managing Director.

Tens of thousands of people have died in the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital on January 12, and hundreds of thousands are now homeless.

The Government of Canada will match dollar for dollar the contributions of individual Canadians to eligible organizations, including the Canadian Red Cross and World Vision Canada, in support of humanitarian, recovery and reconstruction efforts in Haiti, up to a total of $50 million.
