STORY SUMMARY: Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) top priority is returning the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor to service as safely and as quickly as possible. AECL has released the following videos to provide more information on the NRU Return-to-Service Plan.

First Video:

AECL's Senior Vice-President and Chief Nuclear Officer, Bill Pilkington, explains the sequence of events required to return the NRU to high power once the repair welds are complete. Mr. Pilkington also describes maintenance upgrades that AECL has been conducting at NRU, upgrades that can only be done while the reactor is in a deep shutdown state.

Second Video:

AECL's Start-Up Team Leader, John Arnold, outlines in greater detail his team's plan to implement multi-stage activities required to ready the reactor for start-up and the more than 1,000 steps the team will oversee in order to get the reactor back up and running including adding almost 60 metric tons of heavy water to the system and preparing the NRU for refuelling.
