Why Walkability?

A recent Toronto Public Health study found overwhelming consumer preference for walkable neighbourhoods with a range of shops and services within walking distance, a short commute to work or school, and easy access to public transit. The study further found that people living in walkable neighbourhoods have lower body weights and that walkable neighbourhoods contribute to better air quality and traffic reduction.

Walk Score's walkability ranking is the only international, quantitative ranking of walkability. Cities and neighbourhoods are ranked on a scale of 0-100, with locations receiving a score of 90-100 deemed a "Walkers' Paradise."

Walk Score's Advisory Board includes urban planning, environmental and technical experts from organizations such as Sightline Institute and The Brookings Institution. Detailed ranking methodology is available at
