Toshiba Celebrates 25 Years Of Technological Innovation

Libretto W100 and Tecra R700 Introduced in Recognition of 25th Anniversary of First Notebook Computer

MARKHAM, ON, June 21 /CNW/ - Toshiba of Canada Limited announced today the introduction of two new products, the Libretto W100 dual-screen notebook and the Tecra R700 ultra-light full function notebook, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the world's first mass-market notebook, the Toshiba T1100. Since launching the Toshiba T1100 in the spring of 1985, the company has maintained an impressive track record of innovation and has been a leading pioneer in the development of mobile computing worldwide.

"This major milestone is an opportunity to both proudly reflect on the tremendous impact Toshiba has had as a leader in the field of mobile computing and to look forward to the company's continued success in combining superior craftsmanship with smart features to provide consumers with the best possible product," said Toshiba product manager, Mini Saluja.

Many Steps; One Amazing Journey

Since 1985, Toshiba has sold more than 90 million notebooks world-wide and along the way has added more and more functionality, features and connectivity options, while also reducing the weight and dimensions of the finished products. In addition to a rich history of environmental leadership, the company has achieved many of the industry's first major milestones. These include:

  • The first portable PC featuring an internal hard disk drive
  • The first pen tablet slate PC
  • The first notebook PC with a CD-Rom Drive
  • The first notebook PC with a DVD drive
  • The first notebook PC with Wireless capabilities
  • The first AV notebook PC featuring LCD TV-class video quality
  • World's first notebook to comply with the EU's Restriction of Hazardous Substances regulations
  • First notebook with a Solid State Drive

The new anniversary models, the Libretto W100 and the Tecra R700 ultra-light notebook, are the latest in a long-line of groundbreaking products from Toshiba.

Libretto W100:  Touch Your Life
Toshiba's new Libretto W100 simply reinvents mobile computing.  The world's first dual-screen Windows 7 notebook, it is the smallest high-performance notebook that Toshiba has ever produced. Weighing as little as 819 grams and featuring seamless WI-FI connectivity, this unit is designed for consumers who want to be at the forefront of creative mobile computing and want to enjoy state-of-the art web and computing applications.

It combines a full Windows computing experience with an intuitive touch interface on two 7-inch screens panels that give users more control over how they see their content.  For example, users can hold the Libretto W100 vertically to read the double-page spread of a newspaper, or horizontally to read a document on the upper screen, while using the lower screen to capture clippings and ideas. The lower screen can also display a virtual keyboard.

With the Libretto W100, the possibilities for your digital lifestyle are limitless.  Send emails, surf the net, watch videos or read e-books, you can even plan a meeting, check the destination address and read through your presentation in a taxi - with all data safely stored on the 62 GB Solid State Drive. Users can even choose between virtual keyboards, including an ingenious split keypad for fast accurate typing using only your thumbs. Twenty-five years ago Toshiba put a physical keyboard in a portable computer - with this device Toshiba has taken it away. Are you ready to touch the future?

Airflow Cooling Technology, co-developed by Intel® and Toshiba, allows the Tecra R700 to integrate the latest Intel® Core family processors in an ultra-slim casing while keeping the sound of the fan to a minimum. A honeycomb structure in the palmrest area makes the Tecra R700 highly durable against flexing - protecting the electronic and mechanical components from being damaged, considerably prolonging the life of the product.
