Toronto International Women’s Day

TORONTO, March 8, 2013 /CNW/ - Thousands of women will take to the streets tomorrow for the annual International Women's Day rally and march.

The 2013 theme is "Fires are Burning, We are Rising, No more Violence, No more Abuse, Respect our Bodies, Respect Our Choices. We will be marching to demand respect for aboriginal women; an end to violence and abuse and for reproductive justice for all women

The rally at OISE will feature speakers from the Idle No More movement, a smudge from an aboriginal elder and aboriginal drummers as well as speakers on reproductive justice / access to abortion and violence against women.

"Idle No More Toronto is led by indigenous women and we are committed to working in support of, ensuring the inherent rights of First Nations Peoples and the protection of our environment and waters" said Crystal Sinclair, with Idle No More Toronto.

"We are constantly hearing about the abuse, sexual assaults and violence that women and girls are experiencing. On International Women's Day our voices are united - violence against women and girls has to stop", said Judy Vashti Persad, from Women Working with Immigrant Women.

The IWD rally and march unites women across Toronto. We are proud that the march brings together women from diverse communities, filling the streets, celebrating the day, and calling for a city, province, country and world, that is safe, caring and equitable for all women.", said Vashti Persad.
