CALGARY, Nov. 22, 2016 /CNW/ - Former Calgary Flame Theoren Fleury is joining the army on December 6. It's not what you think, and it's not just any army. Fleury will be speaking to "100 Men Who Give a Damn" about his life journey and his charity.
"We are an army of men who give a damn about the Calgary community and each other," says Oliver Baezner, co-founder of 100 Men Who Give A Damn, a local charity.
Theoren Fleury spent 18 years in the NHL and during his 11 years with the Calgary Flames, he racked up 791 Goal Points. As a 5'1" player, he exceeded all expectations, and then went on to play for the Colorado Avalanche, the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and the Belfast Giants.
As a former NHL All-Star, Stanley Cup winner and Olympic Gold Medalist, Fleury's personal battle with sexual abuse by a coach in his junior years led him to found a charity, TheoFleury14.com, and to become a two time bestselling author of Playing with Fire & Conversations with a Rattlesnake.
Fleury will address the group, "100 Men Who Give a Damn", which was founded by Oliver Baezner and Alex Putici in June 2014. 100 Men Who Give a Damn brings Calgary men together four times a year to each give $100, all of which goes to a local charity. The men nominate charities and after the founders narrow the choice to three, the men vote on which charity will receive the donations from that meeting. Over a year, that adds up to over $40,000 to benefit local charities.
Inspired by a conversation with Alison Lapczuk who started "100 Women Who Care Calgary," Baezner decided to find out if a similar approach to charitable giving exists for men. After learning that there is wasn't anything for men in Calgary he decided to start "100 Men Who Give a Damn" Calgary.
"In just two years, we have raised over $100,000 for local Calgary charities," says Baezner. "We're excited about Theoren Fleury coming to speak to us about his remarkable life. "100 Men Who Give A Damn" will nominate their favourite charity to receive the funds prior to each of their four annual events. The founders will narrow the choice down to three candidates, and the group will vote on the winner at their one and a half hour meetings.
Fleury will be speaking Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 pm at Tool Shed Brewery, 801 30 St NE Calgary, AB, and the meeting is open to all Calgary and area men who "want to join the army".
