TORONTO, April 5, 2016 /CNW/ - The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) Canada is pleased to announce the list of nominees for its second Canadian Best in Business competition, which recognizes outstanding business reporting published or broadcast in 2015.
The nominees represent some of Canada's most venerable news organizations, including Canadian Business, Vancouver Sun, Reuters Canada, Alberta Venture, The Globe and Mail, the Wall Street Journal's Canadian bureau, Maclean's and more.
This year's contest had a record number of entries, and publications from across Canada submitted their work. Journalists from places such as the Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Alberta Oil and Advisor.ca entered the Best in Business contest for the first time this year.
The nominated works reflect a diverse set of issues particular to Canadian business — from budget coverage and Bombardier news to Ashley Madison and real estate opportunities.
"We're thrilled to be able to recognize the best in Canadian business journalism," said Joanna Ossinger, SABEW president and team leader for First Word Americas FX at Bloomberg News. "It's great to see this contest thriving along with SABEW's Canada arm overall. And for that, I'd like to thank the SABEW Canada Committee for their hard work in making it happen."
"We were excited to see the contest expand this year with more entries from more places," added Bryan Borzykowski, chair of SABEW Canada and a member of SABEW's board of governors. "With no other contest like it in Canada, Best in Business is only going to grow from here."
There are a total of 30 finalists in 10 categories, selected from more than 100 applicants from publications across the country. Categories include investigative, commentary, breaking news, investing and personal finance, features, multimedia, beat reporting, package and profile.
SABEW Canada would like to extend a very heartfelt thank-you to our distinguished judges, chosen from among Canadian and U.S. news outlets. We'd also like to thank our sponsors, TD Canada, Schulich School of Business, Fidelity Investments and CNW Group, for their support.
The winners will be announced at the Best In Business awards reception on April 20 at Valdez in Toronto. Business journalists interested in attending can register at http://bit.do/sabewbib. The cost is $25 for SABEW members and $40 for non-members. Attendance includes hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) is a 50-year-old organization with more than 3,000 members across the globe. Journalists from the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, CNN and other organizations big and small are involved in the organization.
A group of Canadian journalists launched SABEW Canada, SABEW's first international chapter, in September 2014. We now have more than 200 members, among them reporters and editors from The Globe and Mail, National Post, Montreal Gazette, Vancouver Sun, Alberta Venture, Canadian Business, Maclean's, MoneySense, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and more.
SABEW's mission statement is simple: We want to define and inspire excellence in business journalism. We do that by hosting educational events with company chief executives, leading business journalists and well-known politicians, among others.
We also offer teletraining to members to help improve their skills, and hold networking events where business journalists can make new connections, and catch up with old colleagues and friends.
Our thanks to CNW Group for sponsoring this announcement!
