The Great Food Drive for Children: Alarming Results

With less than 15% of the total expected monetary donations received to date, Moisson Montréal is concerned about the consequences on children if it does not meet its objectives.

MONTREAL, April 15, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - In the third and last week of The Great Food Drive for Children, Moisson Montréal, Moisson Rive-Sud and le Centre de bénévolat et Moisson Laval are far from reaching the donations they had hoped for. The goal this year is to raise non-perishable food items for babies and toddlers, as well as $200,000 in monetary donations by April 21st, 2014.

"During this Easter week, 20,000 children from 0 to 5 years of age will not have enough to eat in the Greater Montreal area. We are calling on the population's generosity so that together we can make a real difference in the lives of our little ones. It is important to note that only 1% of the food received at Moisson Montréal is suitable for toddlers. It's a very difficult situation because they are at a crucial period for both their mental and physical development. " says Dany Michaud, Executive Director of Moisson Montreal.

How can you help?
Until April 21st, the public is invited to visit to make a monetary donation. They can also visit one of the 104 participating Uniprix stores to deposit non-perishable food donations for toddlers. The money raised will be used exclusively to purchase and distribute food for toddlers with partnering community organizations who have programs specifically targeting families with young children and expectant mothers.

  • Make a monetary donation on instead of buying a chocolate Easter bunny
  • Go to the nearest Uniprix and get rid of your pocket change
  • Add some baby food jars and diapers to your list and drop them off at Uniprix

About the Great Food Drive for Children
Initiated in 2012 by Moisson Montréal, the Great Food Drive for Children is an annual campaign that involves two other major food banks, Moisson Rive-Sud and the Centre de bénévolat et moisson Laval, as well as Uniprix, a new corporate partner. The primary objective of the Great Food Drive for children is to raise monetary donations and food for toddlers, in order to help feed over 20,000 toddlers aged 0-5 living in poverty in the Montreal region.
