TORONTO, Nov. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - The all-women design team behind Toronto's Creative Matters will celebrate 25 years of designing custom hand-made rugs for some of the world's most respected luxury brands when it mounts its much-anticipated The Art Day Project in partnership with the Textile Museum of Canada and international fair trade NGO Label STEP beginning on November 20 and running to 24, 2013, at TMC, 55 Centre Avenue in Toronto.
A year in the making, The Art Day Project aims to "celebrate and demystify the art of rug design and fair trade weaving" with a behind-the-scenes educational exhibit, public multi-media presentation, gala fundraiser, hands-on design workshops, and rug design competition. The public presentation, Responsible Rug Making: The Fair Trade/Quality Connection, led by Carol Sebert, co-founder of Creative Matters, and Reto Aschwanden, commercial director of the Swiss-based fair trade NGO Label STEP (www.label-step.org) will be held Wednesday, November 20, 6:30 pm at TMC ($20 admission). The Art Day Project promises to offer "a visually stunning behind-the-scenes look at the art of fair trade rug making and offer insights into the complex process of making artisanal carpets in the 21st-century," including those designed by Creative Matters for Gucci, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Tom Ford.
"We're thrilled to be partnering with the Textile Museum of Canada and Label STEP to make The Art Day Project a reality. Our hope is to demystify and raise awareness for the life-enhancing benefits of creative design and ethical fair trade production methods in conjunction with our 25th anniversary," said Carol Sebert and Donna Hastings, co-founders of Creative Matters.
Established in 1988, Creative Matters designs and creates custom fair trade floor and wallcoverings. With rugs and carpets in more than 40 countries, Creative Matters' international clientele range from such luxury retailers as Gucci, Tom Ford and Louis Vuitton to hotels, corporate offices, private homes, and diplomatic residences and embassies worldwide. Creative Matters proudly supports Label STEP, an international organization committed to fighting abusive child labour, improving the working and living conditions of carpet weavers and promoting environmentally friendly production methods. www.creativemattersinc.com
