Statement: C4CA Expresses Concern and Condolences for those affected by the
San Bruno Gas Explosion
TORONTO, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - The members of Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) send our thoughts and prayers to all those affected by the Pacific Gas and Electric gas explosion in San Bruno, California. The massive explosion that occurred beside a local high school is believed to have been caused by a break in a two-foot-wide natural gas pipeline. The most recent reports are that the explosion has killed four people and severely injured five others, with more expected.
This tragedy is exactly what we fear. It reinforces the urgent need for Premier McGuinty to impose an immediate moratorium on the proposed 945 MW gas-fired plant in Oakville. We urge Premier McGuinty to reconsider the location of the Oakville power plant.
Our hearts go out to the people of San Bruno, who must now live with the aftermath, and with the memory of a fireball erupting more than 300 metres in the air, destroying and damaging over 170 homes and killing or injuring family members, friends and neighbours. The explosion destroyed the grid of water mains that supplied local fire hydrants, leaving no immediate access to water to fight the fires of multiple neighbourhoods, now destroyed or damaged by the blast.
The people of San Bruno should not have to deal with this, and we hope that our families, friends and neighbours will never have to deal with a similar tragedy in our community.
We ask Premier McGuinty: How close is too close? We as citizens have a right to hear your answer. In the aftermath of today's horrible tragedy, how can you expect any of us to be willing to send our children to school and daycares in the shadow of this massive gas-fired power plant?
