Statement by Minister Patty Hajdu on the Occasion of International Day of the Girl

OTTAWA, Oct. 11, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement:

"Today we mark the International Day of the Girl, a day established by the United Nations to celebrate the extraordinary contributions that all girls and young women in Canada and worldwide make to their families, communities, and countries.

October 11th is also an important day to recognize that girls and young women still struggle in the face of poverty, violence, discrimination and oppression.

Our country believes in equality, and that means that every girl deserves an equal chance to reach her full potential. We know that girls are engaged, connected and ready to work for change. Anything is possible with our support.

Let's make International Day of the Girl a day of action at home and around the world to address persistent inequalities between girls and boys in all aspects of their lives. Now is the time to lend our voices to young women and girls who are leading the international grassroots movement in support of fair and equal opportunities for all girls.

By working together, we can transform girls' despair into hope, and their dreams into reality. Let's do it #Because of Her!"
