Party leader Elizabeth May

TORONTO, May 30 /CNW Telbec/ - The following statement was released today by Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) President Basil Stewart, mayor of Summerside, P.E.I., following the speech to delegates by Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada at FCM's 73rd Annual Conference:

"Today, municipal leaders welcomed Elizabeth May and applauded her message that municipalities need sustained funding and a strong partnership with Ottawa.

We appreciate her ongoing support for federal investments in affordable housing and public transit. These investments are essential to protecting Canada's quality of life and strengthening our economy in the future.

Ms. May remains one of Canada's leading advocates for protecting the environment and fighting climate change. Municipalities play a vital role in meeting Canada's environmental challenges, and have the practical cost-effective projects necessary to make further progress. We thank Ms. May for bringing her ideas and energy and look forward to working with her to building the relationship with Ottawa we need to fulfill that potential."
