Statement - Update on Randle Reef Sediment Remediation Project

HAMILTON, ON, June 16, 2014 /CNW/ - The Randle Reef project partners wish to inform the community that bids for Stage One of the project, which is to construct an engineered containment facility into which the contaminated sediment would later be placed, have been received and evaluated. All bids received exceeded the budget for this stage of the project.

The Governments of Canada and Ontario, the City of Hamilton, the Hamilton Port Authority, U.S. Steel Canada, the City of Burlington, and Halton Region are committed to working together on this clean-up project within budget parameters. This project is a key initiative in restoring Hamilton Harbour and removing it from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

In order to ensure the best possible outcome, Public Works and Government Services Canada as the contracting authority for the project, on behalf of the funding partners, will be hosting an Industry Engagement Day to consult industry and seek their views with respect to options that will meet the environmental objectives of the project within the available budget.

We will continue to keep the community informed of developments as the project moves forward.
