Spring ahead with IBC's Top 10 things to do around the house as daylight saving time begins

EDMONTON, March 11, 2016 /CNW/ - This weekend, as daylight saving time begins in most of Western Canada, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is reminding Western Canadians of things to do around the house in the lead up to spring.  

"As you get ready to move the clocks ahead this weekend, take a few extra minutes to check some important items off your home maintenance to-do list," said Bill Adams, Vice-President, Western & Pacific, IBC. "Using IBC's top 10 list will help keep you and your family safe over the coming months."

IBC's Top 10 things to do as daylight saving time begins are:

1.       Test and maintain your smoke detectors.

  • Change batteries at least twice a year.

2.       Check your CO detectors.

3.       Review your family's emergency plan.

  • Ensure that you have a plan that works, and review it with your family to make sure they know what to do and where to go in case of an emergency.

4.       Update your emergency kit.

5.       Check your first-aid kit and replace any missing supplies.

6.       Have your fuel-burning appliances inspected by a trained professional.

7.       Check and clean your chimney and vents.

  • Have a professional inspect them to ensure that everything is connected, clean and in good working condition.

8.       Check your car's tire pressure and fluid levels, and make sure all lights and signals are working.

9.       Update your home inventory.

  • In the event of a fire or flood, the inventory will make it easier for you to file a claim

10.    Review your home insurance policy.
