MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision in Windsor last night that has left a 56-year-old woman dead.
Windsor Police notified the SIU that at approximately 8:30 p.m. on October 19, 2009, officers were on their way to the intersection of Tecumseh Road and Walker Road to assist an ambulance with an emergency run to a hospital. At the intersection of Langlois Avenue and Wyandotte Street, the police cruiser and another vehicle collided. The female passenger of the vehicle was taken to Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle was also taken to Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital, and is listed in stable condition. The two officers in the police cruiser were treated for minor injuries, and have since been released from hospital.
The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to investigate the incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
