Sears Canada unveils the Cost and Carbon Savings Calculator in Vancouver, BC

The Sears Robson store is the first retail store to install this Calculator as an interactive window display - the largest touch-screen Calculator in Canada

VANCOUVER, May 28 /CNW/ - Sears Canada Inc. (TSX: SCC) unveiled its new Cost and Carbon Savings Calculator during its Green Up Power Down event in Vancouver today. Sears Canada has created its own Cost and Carbon Savings Calculator to demonstrate to its customers the financial and environmental benefit of ENERGY STAR(R) products and services.

Vancouver residents are invited to visit the Sears Robson store at 701 Granville Street where one store window will feature a life-size, touch screen Cost and Carbon Savings Calculator - the largest of its kind in Canada. Customers can input information about their existing appliances and will immediately be given an estimate of their dollar savings and carbon dioxide savings. The carbon dioxide savings are communicated as the equivalent number of trees planted if old appliances were replaced with new, energy efficient ones.

"As one of the largest retailers in Canada, Sears is committed to bringing our customers tools that will help them make better choices when purchasing and replacing old products and services," said Dr. James Gray-Donald, Associate Vice-President and Sustainability Leader, Sears Canada. "The Cost and Carbon Savings Calculator is a simple, easy-to-use tool that clearly demonstrates the benefits of switching to ENERGY STAR products. Our customers want eco-friendly options that can save them money and the calculator allows them to see first hand the impact their choices have on the environment and their pocket book."

Customers can also access the Calculator through the six new interactive touch screen kiosks that Sears has launched in partnership with BC Hydro. In addition to the Calculator, the kiosks offer tips and resources on energy efficiency and conservation. Today, these kiosks will launch at the Sears Robson store and the EPIC Sustainable Living Expo. By June 15, there will be more kiosks in place for customers at Nanaimo, Langley, Metrotown and the Victoria Sears Home store.

"Awareness is key to electricity efficiency and conservation," said Lisa Coltart, executive director of Power Smart and Customer Care, BC Hydro. "Thanks to our partnership with Sears, we are able to place the new kiosks in Sears stores to ensure consumers have easy access to useful information to make energy efficiency focused purchasing decisions."

As the 2008 and 2009 ENERGY STAR Retailer of the Year, Sears Canada is proud to offer a wide variety of energy efficient products and services. These solutions are an effective way for customers to save money while living a sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle. Dr. Gray-Donald, Sears Canada will participate in the EPIC Sustainable Living Expo on Friday, May 28 at 3:00 p.m. at the New Vancouver Convention Centre unveiling the Cost and Carbon Savings Calculator.
