Sears Canada Issues Safety Notice for Certain Roman Shade Window Coverings

TORONTO, May 17 /CNW/ - Sears Canada Inc. is issuing this safety notice for certain Roman shade Window Coverings. It has been discovered that strangulation can occur if children insert their heads into the loop created by the exposed inner cords and the material of the shade, or if they pull out the exposed inner cords to form a cord loop.

The affected shades were sold in a wide variety of styles and designs, online at www.sears.ca and through the Sears Canada catalogue between January, 2007 and April, 2010. The Sears regular selling price was $9.99 - $149.99.

Neither Health Canada nor Sears Canada has received reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of this product.

For more information, customers are asked to view Health Canada's "Roman Shades and Roll-up Blinds Advisory" at: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/media/advisories-avis/_2008/2008_175-eng.php.

In the interest of consumer safety, Sears Canada urges customers to carefully examine the cords on the back of the blinds. If it appears that there is space for a child to insert their head between the cord and the shade, or the cord can be pulled to form a loop, customers should immediately stop using the blinds.

Customers should not return the shades, but should contact the Window Covering Safety Council toll-free at 1-800-506-4636 to obtain a free child retro fit kit. Alternatively customers can go to the Window Covering Safety Council website at www.windowcovering.org or visit a Sears catalogue desk located in Sears retail stores to obtain a free child retrofit kit.

Sears Canada is bringing this matter to the public's attention in the interest of consumer safety and apologizes to its customers for any inconvenience.
