TORONTO, Nov. 22 /CNW/ - Hunger has become a serious problem in Toronto
as a result of the recession, yet those affected have been suffering in
silence as governments declare the recession over. Austerity measures
being considered by all levels of government are poised to worsen
conditions for those who are struggling.
As a result, the Recession Relief Coalition is holding a Hunger Inquiry to examine
the situation of hunger in Toronto on Tuesday, November 23, 2010,
9am-4pm, at Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity.
More than 30 front line workers, social service agency staff, academics,
community leaders, and people directly affected by hunger are scheduled
to present testimonies of their experiences, knowledge, and
research—and recommendations for improvement--to an expert panel,
selected for their knowledge about poverty and hunger-related issues.
Panelists are: Joshna Maharaj (Celebrity Chef and Food Activist), Bruce
McLeod (former Moderator of the United Church of Canada), Jim Stanford
(Economist, Canadian Auto Workers), Gary Bloch (Family Doctor, St.
Michael's Hospital), Linda Chamberlain (Dream Team), and Toni Panzuto
(Baby and Toddler Nutrition Program Facilitator, FoodShare). More than
300 attendees are expected over the course of the day.
Panelists will be available for interviews between 1pm and 2pm on Nov.
The aims of the Hunger Inquiry are to: a) identify the reasons why
people aren't able to access enough of the nutritious food needed to
maintain and enhance their physical and mental health; b) gather
evidence attesting to the problems that arise from hunger and
malnourishment; c) produce a report that includes recommendations for
action to address the many issues raised through the Inquiry; and d)
mobilize a broad base of allies in efforts to address hunger and
