/R E P E A T -- Unifor president Jerry Dias to march in World Pride parade, new Unifor activist-built float debuts/

TORONTO, June 27, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor National President Jerry Dias will join the hundreds of LGBT Unifor members, activists, leaders and allies to march in the World Pride parade on Sunday at 1 pm.

Unifor LGBT activists from across the country have come to Toronto to participate in World Pride. The Unifor group will convene on Rosedale Valley Road as of 12:15 pm (#51 and #52).

"The work of the union extends far beyond basic wages and benefits - it's about working and walking alongside our LGBT members to help improve their lives and the lives of other LGBT people," Unifor National President Jerry Dias. "Unions have a critical role to play in defending and strengthening LGBT rights here in Canada and around the world. I'm proud to be a part of it."

Unifor participants will range from long-time trade union LGBT activists to those who have newly come out and are participating in Pride for the first time.

The new Unifor float was built by local Unifor activists and staff, in co-ordination with Toronto's Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, in Kensington Market.

Unifor's founding unions were among the first to negotiate same-sex benefits, an important recognition of LGBT couples and their families.

Unifor was founded Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged. With more than 305,000 members, Unifor represents workers in every economic sector. Unifor is committed to ensuring safer workplaces, secure employment, wages and benefits that provide a decent standard of living, greater equality for all members, dignity and respect in the workplace.
