TORONTO, July 17, 2016 /CNW/ - Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) representatives will be on hand in Toronto on Monday as the legal decision into charges against the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is released.

CAMH was charged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for a January 2014 incident in which a registered practical nurse (RPN) was beaten beyond recognition. The four charges are:

  • Failure to provide information, instruction and supervision to protect a worker from workplace violence or the risk thereof;
  • Failure to implement safety devices, measures and procedures to protect a worker from workplace violence or the risk thereof;
  • Failure to develop, establish and put into effect measures and procedures to protect workers from workplace violence or the risk thereof posed by a patient;
  • Failure to reduce to writing the measures and procedures for the health and safety of workers.

ONA notes that the RPN who was beaten and the registered nurses (RN) who came to assist have been unable to return to work since the attack.

The charges have been the subject of a pre-trial and the matter is expected to reach resolution before Justice Bigelow at 2:00 pm at Old City Hall.

ONA is the union representing 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
