/R E P E A T -- Media advisory - National Forum in Calgary to Discuss First Nations Emergency Management/

CALGARY, March 27, 2017 /CNW/ - First Nations emergency management practitioners will gather this week at a National Forum convened by the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) in Treaty 7 territory at Calgary, Alberta, to share information and create awareness of First Nations perspectives on emergency management including response, recovery, preparedness and mitigation.

The Forum will run from March 28-30, 2017, under the banner "Towards Resilience and Self Sufficiency." Delegates will discuss the building of relationships between First Nations governments and the federal, provincial/territorial governments to improve emergency management; and support the development of emergency preparedness and resiliency initiatives at the community level through information sharing, collaboration, education, training and capacity building.

AFN Alberta Regional Chief Craig Makinaw, Emergency Management portfolio holder, will open the conference with an address beginning at approximately 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 28.

Presentations at the National Forum include:

  • First Nations Response and Recovery to Recent Emergency
  • Strengthening Indigenous Emergency Management (EM) in Canada
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods, First Nation Emergency Response
  • Enabling and Empowering First Nations Youth to Help Prevent Fire Deaths
  • Modernizing Canada's Search and Rescue Governance and Policy Framework
  • Proactivity in Emergency Management
  • First Nations Wildfire Evacuation Experiences.
