IKEA Canada gains market share
BURLINGTON, ON, Sept. 18 /CNW/ - Despite the challenging economic situation in the world, fiscal year 2009 was a good year for the IKEA Group. The Group opened 15 new IKEA stores and entered its 25th market, with the new IKEA store in Dublin, Ireland. Sales increased to 21.5 billion Euro, which is an increase of 1.4 per cent compared to last year.
During Fiscal Year 2009 the IKEA Group built 15 new stores, relocated 3 stores, built one distribution centre and invested in several large shopping centre projects. In the coming years IKEA will focus on developing an even more attractive and affordable range of home furnishing products for peoples' different tastes. The IKEA Group will continue to expand according to its long term direction.
"It has been a challenging year in which we have had to adapt to changed market conditions," says Kerri Molinaro, President, IKEA Canada. "We know that many of our customers have less money to spend and our low price concept is therefore more relevant than ever. Our customers have recognized that in tough times IKEA has the better home furnishing offer."
While overall sales at IKEA Canada decreased by 2 per cent compared to last year, the furniture and home furnishings market decreased by 8 per cent (Statistics Canada, September 2008 to June 2009). With the turnaround in the economy, the rebuilding of three store showrooms and eight new Swedish Food Markets, IKEA Canada is positioned for positive growth this year.
