Queen's Guineas top steer sells for top dollar at The Royal

TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2015 /CNW/ - A steer named "Last Chance" was the first buying opportunity at the Queen's Guineas Live Sale at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) in Toronto on November 6. Trainer and owner Sylvia Megens of Goodwood, ON, and Last Chance took the Grand Champion ribbon during the competition earlier in the day.

A University of Guelph agriculture graduate, Megens has been showing cattle at the RAWF for 12 years. She intends to use her experience and her education to become a 4-H leader and to continue showing cattle.

Last Chance weighed in at 1330 lbs and was purchased by Highland Packers Limited of North York for $10/lb.

Reserve Grand Champion, Murray, was shown by Jarrett Hargrave of Proton Station. Weighing 1430 lbs, Murray was purchased by Sanagan's Meat Locker of Toronto for $7/lb.

The Queen's Guineas competition recognizes excellence in the show ring and exhibitors must be 4-H members. Started in 1946 with a grant from the Prince of Wales, the Queen's Guineas is a popular contest for both exhibitors, buyers and those in the stands who come to see one of the best youth competitions at the fair.

The Royal is supported in part by the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the world's largest combined indoor agricultural and equestrian show. This year, the 93rd Royal Agricultural Winter Fair runs November 6-15, 2015 at Exhibition Place, Toronto.
