Key initiatives in progress will be discussed, including the new Prevention Strategy and the restructuring of the Health and Safety Associations to enable enhanced frontline service.
10:00 a.m. Guarding Minds @ Work: ------------------------- A Workplace Guide to Psychological Safety and Health ----------------------------------------------------
Guarding Minds @ Work (GM@W), launched in April 2009, comprises freely available, evidence-based resources for employers to identify and address 12 psychosocial risk factors in their organization to create a psychologically safe and healthy work environment. An update on additional GM@W resources that have been created over the past year will be provided, and results of pilot evaluations of various organizations will be highlighted.
10:00 a.m. Fall Prevention ---------------
This session will provide an overview of how to recognize and evaluate fall hazards; legislation, standards and guidelines that apply to fall hazards; and the controls. Delegates will learn more about what equipment to use for different job applications and how to use and maintain the equipment. They will also receive tools to create a plan of action to reduce injuries from falls in their workplaces. Samples of different types of fall protection equipment will be presented.
2:00 p.m. Do you Hire Young Workers? What You Need To Know ------------------------------------------------
Join this panel discussion to learn about key areas that a Ministry of Labour inspector would want to ensure employers have in place for young workers. Three companies will share their best practices used to orient their young workers. Delegates will take away valuable tips and ideas that they can apply to their own young worker orientation programs.
2:00 p.m. Ontario's New Workplace Violence and Harassment Legislation -----------------------------------------------------------
This two-part session will provide critical insights into Bill 168. Part 1 will cover the seven key areas in this legislation (mandatory new employer policies, required programs, training, and risk assessments, worker rights, obligations to respond to domestic violence in the workplace, and employer reporting requirements). Part 2 will review what workplaces need to do to be in compliance. Learn how to develop policies and programs, incident investigations procedures, and a process to deal with incidents, complaints, and threats of violence.
3:30 p.m. Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) --------------------------------
This session will provide a practical approach to the prevention of MSD risk factors for all workers. Delegates will obtain a thorough understanding of MSDs and how to recognize them. They will focus on human anatomy, the biomechanics of lifting, and the physiology behind human movement. Knowing "why" brings the awareness to a personal level, challenging delegates to think and move differently, thereby improving their quality of life.
