Ottawa Writer Seeks to Modernize the Literary Magazine

OTTAWA, Feb. 12, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - A writer from Ottawa, Ontario is publishing a  magazine that she hopes will change the way literary publications are perceived by readers.

Launched by Suzanne Lucas in 2014, Saturday Night Reader (SNR) magazine focuses exclusively on short stories of 1,000 words or less. SNR's stories, which are a mix of literary and genre fiction, including mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, adventure and horror, are written by Canadian and international writers.

According to Lucas, literary magazines have long been perceived as "elitist", a label she's working hard to dispel. The key, she says, is to find ways to connect with more readers beyond the traditional demographic.  Expanding to genre fiction is one of those ways.

"SNR doesn't represent itself as an exclusive publication. It's intended for those who enjoy all types of stories, whether in-depth character studies or short, imaginative escapes from reality," says Lucas.

For the publisher, reaching a broader audience also means enhancing visual appeal for the casual reader.

"The casual reader isn't attracted to abstract magazine covers, as artistic as they may be. They  also don't want to eyeball pages crammed full of text. You need to grab and maintain their attention with bold, full-colour images and optimal use of white space, which is exactly what SNR does."

SNR is also the first literary magazine to include augmented reality within its pages using LayarTM technology. LayarTM is an interactive application that adds links, videos, and images on top of printed pages. Readers flipping through the magazine can scan pages using their cell phones and be transported online for supplementary digital content.

Saturday Night Reader is available at independent retailers and major Chapters-Indigo stores across Canada.
