OPSEU welcomes newest members at Canadian Mental Health Association Sudbury/Manitoulin

SUDBURY, ON, May 19, 2017 /CNW/ - Frontline and office staff at the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Sudbury/Manitoulin branch voted overwhelmingly in favour of becoming the newest members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) yesterday.

"This vote result at CMHA Sudbury/Manitoulin signals that OPSEU is the union of choice for mental health workers," said OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. "We have a long and proven track record of fighting hard for our members, and I look forward to continuing that record with my newest members as they move toward bargaining their first collective agreement."

Ed Arvelin, chair of OPSEU's Mental Health Division, welcomed OPSEU's latest members into the union's "ever-growing mental health and addictions family.

"Being a part of our Mental Health Division means gaining access to a wealth of resources, such as health and safety training and education opportunities," Arvelin said.

"They'll also have the ability to meet with other CMHAs from across the province to talk about common issues and what other CMHA branches are doing to support their members as they deliver services to the people we assist every day."

Workers at CMHA Sudbury/Manitoulin provide psychosocial rehabilitation, harm reduction, as well as residences, housing support, and emergency shelter to individuals struggling with homelessness and alcohol addiction in the Sudbury area.

OPSEU represents more than 7,000 members working in public hospitals and community mental health agencies across Ontario.
