One-third of Breast Cancers are Preventable

Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation engages with women to reduce their risk

TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) releases its televised public service announcement (PSA) today marking the launch of its new breast health program, which engages with women about making healthy behavior changes to reduce breast cancer risk.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund one third of breast cancers are preventable through diet, maintaining a healthier body weight and regular physical activity. Research undertaken by CBCF shows that women don't know breast cancer risk can be reduced and that there are steps they can take to improve their breast health. Through its new breast health program CBCF offers women evidence-based information and practical steps that will inspire them to improve their health and reduce their breast cancer risk, as well as the risk of other chronic diseases.

"In recent years, breast cancer mortality rates have decreased, yet incidence rates for Canadian women have remained the same," said Sandra Palmaro, CEO, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Ontario Region. "One in nine Canadian women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and we believe that incidence rates could be reduced by engaging with women about their breast health."

As a proven leader and trusted resource on breast health and breast cancer, CBCF is engaging with women to make their breast health a priority and encouraging them to take steps toward making positive changes in their lives. Research shows that women can reduce their risk of breast cancer:

  • by maintaining a healthier body weight through physical activity and eating a balanced diet,
  • drinking less alcohol,
  • quitting smoking,
  • limiting use of hormone therapy during menopause and;
  • reducing exposure to environmental carcinogens and hormone disruptors.

"Research shows that one third of breast cancers are preventable, and a healthier lifestyle reduces breast cancer risk," said Marilyn Gentry, CEO, World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) UK and President, WCRF global network.  "WCRF commends Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's ongoing commitment to breast cancer prevention and for launching an innovative program that engages Canadian women to take steps to stop breast cancer before it starts."

Women can learn more about practical steps they can take to reduce their risk of breast cancer and be inspired to try new things to help them enjoy healthier lives through CBCF's new Tumblr-based platform at A new health promotion brochure is also available through doctors' offices to enable women to start a conversation about their breast health.
