Nurses' Union Front-Line Members Mark Labour Day Across Ontario
TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2017 /CNW/ - Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) members will be out in force this weekend to mark Labour Day 2017 in cities across the province. Front-line registered nurses (RNs), health-care professionals and nursing student affiliates will march in Labour Day parades and participate in events to show their solidarity.
"Our members are on the front lines of health care," notes ONA First Vice-President Vicki McKenna, RN, "and as patient advocates, we continue to champion better quality health care and quality of life for all Ontarians."
"With this year's Labour Day theme of 'Step Up and Speak Out,' ONA front-line members are in a unique position to continue to call for better care for our patients," she said. "We will never give up our efforts to advocate for safe staffing levels, an end to workplace violence and an end to harassment and discrimination for our members. We are keenly aware of the connection between economic wellness and the health of our patients, and will continue to get loud about the fight to improve Ontarians' quality of life. I urge Ontarians to join nurses in our efforts."
ONA members have been getting loud about the many challenges of Ontarians accessing high-quality health care in a timely manner. Toronto-area nurses and health-care professionals will march in the city's Labour Day parade on September 4, and other ONA members across the province will participate in local Labour Day events, including Durham Region, Sarnia, London and other cities.
"Labour Day is an opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate the difference that labour unions have made for the benefit of all citizens," says McKenna. "It is also a time to remember the dedicated care that ONA members provide to their patients, and their role as patient advocates."
ONA is the union representing 64,000 registered nurses and health-care professionals, as well as more than 16,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
