New resource: How arts education can support teachers in their role as cultural transmitters in Francophone minority settings

OTTAWA, Sept. 24, 2015 /CNW/ - The Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF), jointly with the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française (FCCF), is proud to launch a new document that looks at how arts education curricula are providing teachers with the tools they need to act as cultural transmitters. French and social studies curricula were the focus on previous documents.

"Knowing One's Community Through Arts Education is the third booklet of a series that explores the relationship between curricula and Francophone identity building among students attending French-language schools in minority settings," says CTF President Heather Smith.

"Curricula should help teachers to better fulfil the cultural mandate of French-language schools. These studies show that much work remains to be done, especially in the area of arts education," she adds. "However, some provinces and territories in Canada are moving in the right direction, and we have highlighted examples that will inspire the education community as a whole."

"CTF is very grateful to FCCF for its exceptional collaboration during the development of this booklet."

The launch is taking place today in Niagara Falls as part of a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Association canadienne d'éducation de langue française (ACELF), which brings together representatives from all Canadian provinces et territories, including senior officials from each Department of Education.

Founded in 1920, CTF is a national alliance of Member organizations representing nearly 200,000 teachers across Canada. CTF is also a member of Education International (@eduint) which represents 30 million educators around the world. Follow CTF on Twitter: @CanTeachersFed and @EnseigneCanada.
