Monday: New union Unifor celebrate first birthday on Labour Day

Olivia Chow, CLC President Hassan Yussuff, Unifor President Jerry Dias to speak at Nathan Phillips Square

TORONTO, Aug. 29, 2014 /CNW/ - Hundreds and hundreds of Unifor members and their families will gather at Nathan Phillips Square downtown Toronto, before the Labour Day parade begins on Monday, September 1 to take in inspiring speeches and celebrate the first anniversary of the creation of Unifor. The theme this year is working towards a better city, in light of upcoming municipal elections.

Unifor members will be gathering at Nathan Phillips Square as of 8 a.m. and speeches will begin at 8:50.

Speakers will include (in this order):

-Naureen Rizvi, Unifor GTA director (event MC)
-John Cartwright, Toronto and York Region Labour Council President
-Olivia Chow, mayoral candidate, former MP, City Councillor and school trustee
- Hassan Yussuff, Canadian Labour Congress President
- Katha Fortier, Unifor Ontario Regional Director
-Jerry Dias, Unifor National President

The Nathan Phillips Square gathering area will also include face painting, games and cotton candy.

Unifor was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union merged. The union represents more than 305,000 workers in every economic sector, advocating on behalf of its members and all working people for safer conditions, respect and dignity at work, a decent standard of living and greater equality.
