New i-MiEV electric vehicle plugs in to bullfrogpowered(R) homes
TORONTO, Aug. 16 /CNW/ - Bullfrog Power, Canada's 100 per cent green electricity provider, announced today that during its Clean Across Canada tour, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada's electric vehicle will stop to recharge at, among other places, bullfrogpowered homes in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. A 28 day coast-to-coast event beginning on August 17, 2010, the tour will showcase Mitsubishi's new electric, zero tailpipe emissions car, the i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle). By supporting renewable energy through Bullfrog Power, Mitsubishi is minimizing the tour's environmental impact and demonstrating to Canadians a way to further green electric vehicles (EVs): choose clean, renewable energy to power the cars, ensuring emissions are not simply transferred from the tailpipe to polluting sources of electricity generation.
"Mitsubishi Motors is excited to work with Bullfrog Power to offer Canadians a cleaner transportation choice," said Koji Soga, President and CEO, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada. "We encourage Canadian residents and organizations to make their electric vehicles as green as possible through efficient driving and the use of clean, renewable electricity."
Electric vehicle (EV) technology reduces the tailpipe emissions of motor vehicles. If, however, the electricity used to power those vehicles is generated from fossil fuels, the emissions just move from the car's tailpipe to the facility generating the electricity. Conventional fossil-fuel based electricity generation is a leading source of carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas linked to climate change, as well as other emissions that lead to poor air quality. Choosing Bullfrog Power for an EV is an easy way to eliminate these upstream emissions and support the development of new, renewable generation in Canada.
"Renewable energy and electric vehicles have the power to revolutionize transportation in Canada. Transforming our transportation landscape to a cleaner model, clean energy and EVs will play a key role in improving air quality and helping us address climate change." said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. "We are excited to be a part of Mitsubishi's Clean Across Canada tour and to be creating awareness around green choices that enable Canadians to help advance our systems and infrastructure-and ultimately create a cleaner world for future generations."
Bullfrog Power injects clean, renewable electricity onto the regional grid to match the amount of power drawn from the electricity grids by its customers in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and the Maritimes. Bullfrog's electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogo(M) program instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. Bullfrog Power uses the collective demand of its customers to cause new renewable facilities to be built in Canada.
Supporting green electricity for the tour complements Mitsubishi Motor's commitment to environmental responsibility. In April 2010, Mitsubishi became the first automobile company in Canada to bullfrogpower its head office with 100 per cent renewable electricity. And, by pioneering new electric vehicle technology through the i-MiEV, which is equipped with a small efficient electric motor and a high capacity lithium-ion battery pack, the company is reducing motor vehicle and greenhouse gas emissions, both of which are linked to climate change and poor air quality. The i-MiEV is expected to travel up to 120 kilometres on a single charge.
