Minister Kent Recognizes the 25th Anniversary of the Canadian Hurricane Centre

OTTAWA, Nov. 28, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Minister of the Environment, today issued the following statement:

"As Minister responsible for the Canadian Hurricane Centre, I am proud of the service it has provided over the past 25 years. In 1987, Environment Canada established the Centre, recognizing that Canadians deserved an expert source of hurricane information focused specifically on how these storms affect our country. Since then, Canadian Hurricane Centre meteorologists have issued more than 2000 information bulletins, providing important weather information to help citizens, businesses and visitors to Canada prepare for the potential impacts of these powerful storms.

"Although, fortunately for most Canadians, this was a moderately active hurricane season, our forecasters monitored the activity in southern waters closely, making sure they were ready when storms like Leslie and Sandy were poised to affect Canada. The Canadian Hurricane Centre stands ready at all times to deliver on its mandate; that is to help Canadians, weather-sensitive industries and businesses and our visitors protect themselves, their property and economic assets from the impacts of storms of tropical origin, whether on land or at sea. The role of the Canadian Hurricane Centre will continue to be very important as the frequency and severity of extreme weather are expected to increase in the future."
